22 Feb : The first spinning mill of India

The first Indian cotton mill,The Bombay Spinning Mill“, was found today in 1854 in Bombay by Cowasji Nanabhai Davar.

Cowasji Nanabhai Davar

It was set up to offset the unfavourable balance of trade with England. India was exporting raw cotton to England and importing textiles from the Lancashire mills at an escalating cost. Thus, Nanabhai took this wise decision. Started with an investment of ₹5 Lakh, the mill was first of its kind as it was steam powered.
This was actually first successful venture. The first Indian cotton cloth mill was established in 1818 at Fort Gloaster near Kolkata, but this mill was a failure.
