2 Dec : The first artificial heart beats in a human

I would call him ‘lucky man’ as he recieved the first artificial heart. Name of this artificial heart was Jarvik 7 and the recipient was a dentist Barney Clark. He survives the heart for 112 days.

The heart was developed by Dr. Robert Jarvik under the supervision of Willem Johan Kolff. It weighed almost 180 kg.

Clark had the idea that his chance of long-term survival was virtually nil, but agreed to undergo the surgery in the interest of advancing science. The implant was performed at the University of Utah by Dr. William DeVries, and the Jarvik 7 functioned as expected.

The first artificial heart was made by the Soviet scientist Vladimir Demikhov in 1937. It was transplanted to a dog.
